Eating Disorders are Emergencies not Chronic Illnesses

Thursday, March 27th, 2008

This afternoon, a father emailed me to say that one of the most valuable things I conveyed to him and his wife was my belief that “an eating disorder was an emergency to be conquered-not a chronic illness to be tolerated.” This family had been told by other providers that they should be prepared for their child’s eating disorder to linger for years and years. These same providers had advised the family to accept their daughter’s disorder because there was little the family could do otherwise. He added that “if we had read your book last July we could have avoided the hospital.” Dad said that my
optimism in the belief that they could put the eating disorder to rest made all the difference to them in helping their daughter overcome her eating disorder.

The Parent’s Guide to Eating Disorders Wins 2008 NAPPA Parenting Resource Competition!

Thursday, March 27th, 2008

Dear Readers,

Marcia and have exciting news to share. Our book, The Parent’s Guide to Childhood Eating Disorders: Supporting Self-Esteem, Healthy Eating & Positive Body Image at Home, has just been awarded a National Parenting Publiciations Awards (NAPPA) Honors Award!

NAPPA is sponsored by the website parenthood.com. We’ll be featured prominently on its NAPPA awards page starting on June 1, 2008, so we’ll let you know when that information is up and where you can find it.

This organization provides a tremendous service to parents, tipping them off to important books for kids and parents, as well as judging quality among toys, music, video games and DVDs. The organization’s high standards have made its awards among the most respected in children’s and parent’s education and entertainment. Thank you, NAPPA, for your vote of confidence!

To mark this occasion, our publisher, Gurze Books, is now offering our book at a 25% discount just until April 30. Just go to their March enewsletter to see the notice of our award, and order the book!

Be well,

Nancy

“You Gave Me Hope” a patient’s poem

Tuesday, March 18th, 2008

Jess, a thirteen-year old with anorexia, wrote this poem for me. It touched my heart. I hope it touches yours. Jess is now wonderfully recovered and still writing poetry. Marcia

Gave Me Hope

Love is close
And dear to my heart
This friendship we have
Is only the start
You saved my life and made it worth while
When I was blue
You helped me put on a smile
You took me under your wings
And embraced me for the rough flight
Even though it was a tough battle
We never gave up the fight
When I was weak
You made me so much stronger
Without you in my life,
I don’t know if I could have lived a lot longer
Through good times and bad
Victories and defeat
You never let the worries slow you down
You never missed a beat
Somehow you always knew the right thing to say
You vanished all my worries
Made them all go away
You gave me hope and let me see the light
And in the end I won the fight
You helped me not be afraid to show my true self
You replenished my state of mind and nourished me back to health
Today when I look and the mirror and love who I have become
I know in the end we both have won
