As a professional organizer whose parents did not provide structured meals, I've had to struggle all my life to create my own.  Brava to you for bringing up the connection between disorganization and disordered eating!!!</description>

It's great to hear from a colleague of Deborah's. You are absolutely right. The combination of structure, in the form of regular meals and snacks, and shared family meals is unbeatable. There is a very large body of literature on the value of the family meal, showing that kids who grow up with this tradition tend to have fewer body image and eating problems, make healthier food choices as adults, and tend to be better protected from problems such as addiction. Such simple habits and rituals result in lifelong rewards.

Deborah Kawahima is a colleague of mine here in Los Angeles.  I have to say what an interesting subject.  You've really hit the nail on the head with this one!

When I was a kid, my family ate meals like clockwork when my father came home from work (he was hungry!)  The kitchen was then closed for the night, except for some snacking around 8pm.  But this mealtime, over 18 years, really taught me the value of structure... and of course the value of family sharing at the table.  Boy those were wild times!
